We’re celebrating a huge milestone: 200 episodes of the Talk About Talk podcast!

Over the years, I’ve coached hundreds (actually, thousands if you count workshop participants) of ambitious executives. And I’ve noticed a clear pattern:

The most successful leaders think differently from everyone else.

Are you curious how?

In this seminal 200th episode, I share three clear things that these high-impact leaders do differently, that you can adopt into your day-to-day communication.

If you’re ambitious and want to elevate your communication from “manager” to “leader,” here are the three shifts you need to make.

1️⃣ Communicate with intent and precision

Early in my career, I remember sitting in meetings as a young business-school grad, laser-focused on speaking up. I even made a rule for myself: say something, anything, in every meeting.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the shift that separates emerging professionals from exceptional leaders:

Successful leaders aren’t focused on speaking up, they’re focused on communicating with intent and precision.

Every word, question, and story has a purpose. They’re looking to inspire, to clarify, or to align.

They don’t fill the air; they elevate the conversation.

By intent, I mean speaking with purpose.

By precision, I mean brevity and clarity.

Junior folks worry about saying something. Senior leaders worry about saying something worth hearing.

Are you communicating with intent and precision?

2️⃣ Practice next-level listening

The second way successful leaders communicate differently is through next-level listening.

Less experienced professionals often listen just enough to respond, or to figure out what their boss wants to hear. The best leaders listen to understand.

They listen deeply for insights, reflect back what they hear, and ask clarifying questions.

It’s what I call listening to learn, not listening to reply.

This kind of listening builds trust, reveals blind spots, and helps leaders make better decisions.

If you’re serious about leadership, master this one.

Next-level listening. It’s a superpower.

3️⃣ Project confidence without arrogance

Confidence and credibility are magnetic. But there’s a fine line, and successful leaders walk it beautifully.

Early-career folks often focus on building confidence, battling impostor syndrome, and finding their voice (which is normal!). But the more senior and successful leaders I coach? They’ve moved past anxiety, without tipping into arrogance.

This is where a growth mindset is crucial.

The most successful leaders are confident, yet open. Credible, yet curious.

Here’s my litmus test for arrogance: If you worry you might come across as arrogant, you probably aren’t. If you don’t worry about it, you might want to check yourself.

So focus less on “looking confident” and more on staying curious. That’s where credibility lives.

A growth mindset is what distinguishes confidence versus arrogance.
