2️⃣ Top Ten Episodes #10 – Controlling Your Narrative

When it comes to your narrative, you can LET it happen or you can MAKE it happen.

I say make it happen.

Your narrative is closely tied to your personal brand, whether you’re a young manager seeking to make a strong impression or a seasoned executive looking to refine your image. Your narrative can impact your career trajectory.

Controlling your narrative is NOT about being manipulative or deceptive.

Controlling your narrative is about three things:

  1. Identifying a theme you want to emphasize. Something authentic and true to you.
  2. Articulating the theme. Putting words around it. In other words, the literal narrative.
  3. Consistently communicating and reinforcing the theme through your words and actions.

We’ve been talking a lot about AGEISM lately. One of the strategies that I suggest to combat ageism is to “acknowledge the elephant in the room.” You could say something like “I recognize that I am the oldest person on the team.  I also have a lot of valuable experience and expertise that our team can benefit from.”

THAT is controlling the narrative!

When you control your narrative, you can also positively influence your own internal narrative.

3️⃣ Top Ten Episodes #9 – Communication Skills for Job Seekers with executive recruiter Sharon Mah-Gin

Does Sharon’s name sound familiar? This was the third time I’ve interviewed her for the Talk About Talk podcast! In addition to job-seeking, we’ve also talked about updating your resumé and how to network.

Sharon always brings great energy and generous advice.

One such piece of advice: after every line on your resumé, ask yourself, “so what?”

Talk-About-Talk-Andrea-Wojnicki-Ep-161-Controlling-Your-Narrative-So-What-Post-it-Note

According to Sharon Mah-Gin, prospective employers want to know what impact you have made and then how they can benefit from hiring you. They will hire you for one or more of these 3 reasons:

💵 To make money
💰 To save money
👍 To solve an issue

To make this easy for a prospective employer, state your impact in a way that’s measurable whenever possible:

  • “I saved the firm $4MM in fixed costs”
  • “We exceeded our sales objective by 66%”
  • “We launched the project 2 weeks early”
  • “I doubled the size of the department”
  • “We improved our average NPS from X to Y”

Make sure your impact is reflected in your interview answers and in your resumé. Go line by line if you have to.  Then, review it with two words in mind, “so what?”

This “so what” point is just one of Sharon’s many helpful suggestions. You can learn more in ep. 162 Communication Skills for Job Seekers.
