Happy New Year!

Do you know what the top three most common resolutions are?  You can probably guess:

  • exercising more
  • eating healthier
  • losing weight

I can’t help you with THOSE, but I can help you set and achieve important communication resolutions.

Based on all the research, reading, and coaching I did over the past year, I have decided the area I personally want to focus on this year is SELF-AWARENESS.

Episode 148 of the Talk About Talk podcast is a deep dive into how I’m thinking about this goal of self-awareness and how I will make it happen.  I hope it inspires you to do the same.

Self-awareness, is really about being conscious of our own consciousness; a meta-awareness. Self-awareness is recognition of the self. So you can see how self-awareness can help us achieve our goals and improve our communication.

3 Things to Talk About this week:

  1. Creating goals you’re more likely to achieve
  2. Strategies for reaching those goals
  3. Setting YOUR communication goals for 2024

1️⃣ Creating goals you’re more likely to achieve

You’ve probably heard that our goals are more likely achieved when they’re S.M.A.R.T.:  specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.

I used this framework with my personal self-awareness resolution:

S – focusing on specific self-awareness goals before every meeting
M – recording my goal-setting
A – DEFINITELY achievable!
R – Yes! It’s definitely possible to become more self-aware.  (Check out ep.148)
T – I publicly announced in the podcast episode that 2024 my year of self-awareness

Whatever you want to achieve this year, think about how you can also make it a S.M.A.R.T. goal.  (Need some ideas?  See item 3 below.)

2️⃣Strategies for reaching those goals

Once you’ve set your S.M.A.R.T. goal (the WHAT), you then need to figure out HOW you’re going to achieve it.  It’s shocking how so many people don’t consider the how.

I’ve got three (anyone surprised?) things that I’m going to try, and I’m doubling down on announcing them publicly.

  1. Writing down my communication goal for every meeting or significant interaction so that I think at a meta level about what I want to accomplish.

  2. Seeking more feedback from others – personally and professionally.

  3. Recording myself on video and watching myself.  Whether it’s a LinkedIn Live or an in-person corporate workshop, I’m committing to recording and watching more of these.

I know these things work – I coach my clients through them all the time.

3️⃣Setting YOUR communication goals for 2024

Not sure what to set as YOUR communication goals this year?   I have three suggestions for you:

  1. Volunteer to get on stage – lead a meeting or give a presentation, every chance you get!  Practice makes better (not perfect – nobody is perfect) and you’ll gain more confidence each time.
  2. Adopt a growth mindset – I like to say “I know what I know and I’m curious to learn more.”  Make a point of learning something new in every encounter.
  3. Improve your self-awareness.  Practice this with me!

Then, be publicly accountable for your goal.

Send me an email or leave me a voicemail message – I’ll be your accountability partner for this.  Remember, we’re more likely to meet a goal once we’ve committed it to someone else.
